Privately and professionally a strong duo: Amra and Rainer Deisenhammer have built a worldwide market leadership with GW Cosmetics as CEOs. “Of course, that makes us proud!”, they agree in the interview
You can’t escape the eyebrow and eyelash hype that has been prevalent for years – the Austrian company GW Cosmetics has perfected this trend. The manufacturer of high-quality hair, face, and body care products now distributes its items in more than 80 countries. In addition to its own brands RefectoCil – the global market leader in professional eyebrow and eyelash coloring, – Master Lin, and BeautyLash, the family-run company also produces cosmetic products for private-label clients. All products are produced and filled at the headquarters in Leopoldsdorf, with a research and development department enabling pioneering work and ensuring innovation and competitiveness. “From the idea through development to filling and the finished product, everything happens in-house,” says CEO Amra Deisenhammer. Her husband Rainer has been leading the successful Austrian company for 20 years, and Amra Deisen – hammer has been managing director since 2022. The success story began early: GW Cosmetics was founded in 1930 as Gschwendtner Hairdresser in the third district of Vienna.
In addition to hair cutting, eyebrow and eyelash colors were developed and industrially produced after the war. By the 1980s, the products were already being delivered to 20 countries worldwide. Rainer Deisenhammer was a tax consultant when he took over the company in 2004: “The company was a client of mine, and I found the products very exciting, even though I had no idea about chemistry or manufacturing.”
GW Cosmetics was gradually expanded and developed – which included moving to Leopoldsdorf near Vienna. In 2007, the company Weinzierl, which manufactured private-label products in the cosmetics sector, was acquired – hence the name “GW Cosmetics.” “With the know-how gained through the integration, we were able to develop our premium natural cosmetics brand Master Lin,” explains Rainer Deisenhammer. The portfolio now includes a full 1,000 items, and a RefectoCil Academy offers worldwide training
A lot of money has been invested in upgrading with more machines and robots to make production and filling as automatic as possible.
The laboratory upholds the highest standards to create a new beauty experience for in-house brands or private labels.
BeautyLash by RefectoCil brings the quality from the world market leader for DIY home.
With the premium brands RefectoCil, BeautyLash, and Master Lin, GW Cosmetics has supported numerous artists and international stars like Asmik Grigorian and Lili Paul-Roncalli over the years. The Vienna State Opera also relies on GW Cosmetics as an official cosmetics partner. In Vienna or Salzburg, the Brow+Lash Bar by RefectoCil studios are a huge hit.
“The market is growing enormously,” says Amra Deisenhammer confidently. “Twenty years ago, we didn’t even have a tenth of the current volume – we estimate that we will even double this in ten years,” adds her husband.
During the corona pandemic, sales “exploded”: both CEOs describe 2020 and 2021 as the most profitable years, as the retail products were available in drugstores. But that’s not all: Special focus is also placed on employee satisfaction – and their own. “When we’re at home, we naturally talk a lot about work. But it’s also often the case that we say: ‘Enough about RefectoCil, now let’s have dinner,’” laughs Amra Deisenhammer.
“My career has always been important to me, and I longed for someone with whom I could share it. That I found this symbiosis with Rainer makes me very happy,” says Amra Deisenhammer.
What else makes her happy? “Creating something that can be significant for someone, even if only in a small way. That’s why I love doing this job.”
