The Art of Tailcoats

It is now “officially” confirmed that KNIZE’s tailcoat tailoring is true artistry. Since 2021, the bespoke tailcoat tailoring has been recognized as part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

The most important aspect of a tailcoat is the proportions: The jacket must be short, and the trousers high-waisted to make the legs appear as long as possible.

Creating a perfect KNIZE tailcoat requires around one hundred hours of work. Happy customers who own such a masterpiece say, “I can’t wear anything else but bespoke.” Even the legendary Marlene Dietrich regularly had her stage tailcoats tailored at KNIZE in Vienna.

Tailcoat tailoring in Europe boasts a 300-year history. Crafting a tailcoat requires extensive knowledge and skill from the master tailor and a delicate touch of masterful handwork. The production process usually involves interaction with the future wearer, who visits the workshop up to three times until the tailcoat fits perfectly.

Rudolf Niedersüß – his passion creates the global aura of KNIZE tailcoats.

Distinctive features of the tailcoat include elements like the jacket with knee-length „swallowtails“ at the back, short at the front, and always worn open. The tailcoat jacket alone consists of eleven individual pieces. The master tailor requires a lot of finesse, gained through years of experience in cutting techniques, complex hand-sewing techniques, or working in an appropriate workshop. Often, a tailcoat is passed down from one generation to the next (or even further) and adjusted for the new owner. As a bespoke tailcoat can be altered repeatedly, it is a particularly durable and sustainable garment. The bespoke tailcoat has undoubtedly established itself as the most festive evening wear for men – simply a world-famous piece of “clothing art.”
